Ohio State President Gordon Gee disses TCU and BSU

Gordon Gee–arguably the College President with a name MOST fit for a Dr Seuss character, dissed TCU and BSU this morning in an interview with the Associated Press.

Click here for the ESPN article, which includes plenty of comical exerpts from his rant, as well as the responses from TCU and BSU.

Here is my favorite Gordon Gee quote:

“Well, I don’t know enough about the X’s and O’s of college football,” said Gee, formerly the president at West Virginia, Colorado, Brown and Vanderbilt universities. “I do know, having been both a Southeastern Conference president and a Big Ten president, that it’s like murderer’s row every week for these schools. We do not play the Little Sisters of the Poor. We play very fine schools on any given day.

“So I think until a university runs through that gauntlet that there’s some reason to believe that they not be the best teams to [be] in the big ballgame.”
Hmmm… I find this quote particularly humorous, because he is the President of OHIO STATE. Ohio State is NOTORIOUS for scheduling cupcakes.
This is a team that routinely schedules teams like Akron, Ohio, Toledo, Eastern Michigan. Mr. Gee, I can clearly see you know NOTHING about X’s and O’s, because that isn’t Murderer’s Row you’re looking at, that’s High School Detention. Also, when is it a GOOD THING to brag about not being able to hold down a job? I can’t help but wonder if similar melt-downs weren’t the reason you’ve left so many universities.
Gee polishes off his crazy rant with this gem: “If you put a gun to my head and said, ‘What are you going to do about a playoff system [if] the BCS system as it now exists goes away?’ I would vote immediately to go back to the bowl system.”

Mr. Gee… did you draw the short straw? Did you lose a bet? Are you trying to act like a clown?

I love the responses from BSU and TCU. Here is what BCU’s president Bob Kustra had to say:

“Everyone in intercollegiate football knows that athletic directors of those large power conferences are scheduling more and more teams who are I-AA, who are teams at the weaker end of the [non-automatic qualifying] conferences, and for Gee to stand up and talk about murderer’s row every week is just the height of folly.”

Kustra went on:

“He claims that in the SEC, Big Ten and Big 12 it’s murderer’s row every week and there’s absolutely little substance to that claim. The BCS has finally found someone to stand up and defend the indefensible and Gordon Gee proved it — he not just proved that it’s indefensible but he did so with facts that are simply wrong.”

I like what TCU’s Athletic Director had to say:

“Anytime. Anyplace. Anywhere,” he said. “Buckeyes against the Horned Frogs. Tee it up. Let’s go.”

If ONLY this could be decided on the field. If only.
