What Will Jeter’s 3000 Hit Be?
by Colin MacNeil http://www.bronxbombersbeat.com
As I was watching last night’s game and knowing that Derek Jeter is just four-hits shy of 3000, I thought, how will Jeter get it. Will it be a home run, triple, double or a single? However it may be, we are going to be witnessing history as Jeter will be the first Yankee to hit 3000. The last Yankee player to come close to getting 3000 hits was, The Iron Horse – Lou Gehrig – 2721 hits. When Derek hits 3000, he’ll be the 28th player in Major League history to reach that plateau and will be tied for 27th all-time with the great Roberto Clemente.
I know Yankee fans (myself included) are hoping that Jeter will get his 3000 hit at Yankee Stadium. Whether or not he hits number 3000 at the stadium, its going to be great to witness Yankee history. Some fans remember Roger Maris breaking Babe Ruth’s home run record, Mickey Mantle hitting his 500th home run, or seeing Don Larson pitch a perfect game in the 1956 World Series. Now we, as a younger generation of Yankee fans, can say when we are older that we witnessed the Great Yankee Captain, reach the 3000 hit milestone.
