News and Notes from an Action Packed NHL Saturday Night
On Saturday, 14 games were slated on the NHL schedule meaning only two teams were not in action (Phoenix and Anaheim). The following are some notes, news and comments about each game. They are not recaps. If you want recaps, go to NHL.com and read theirs. While at home, with the use of a laptop for Game Center Live with two tabs of 4 games, 2 TV’s with 4 games and lots of DVRing, I am able to follow all of the NHL action.
So here we go…
(Road – Home (Final Score)
Nashville – Calgary (2-0) – The news continues to get worse for the Flames as they continue to be inept offensively getting shutout. They have scored 15 goals in 7 games. How much more can Jerome take? Nice bounce back for the Preds.
Minnesota – Vancouver (2-3 OT) – A much needed OT win for the Canucks getting a PP goal by Salo to win it. The Wild made two moves with San Jose to finally add offensive talent and it still hasn’t come together. Great Hockey Market – Mediocre Hockey Team.
San Jose – Boston (4-2) – After scoring the game tying goal in New Jersey on Friday, Pavelski stayed hot and scored. Down 2-0 in third, Lucic and Seguin took over the game with goals :30 apart to tie the game and I thought Jack Edwards heart was going to explode. But, Ben Ferriero’s winner late in the third sent Mr. Edwards home depressed. Sharks get 4 points for weekend to start long road trip. Bruins continue to struggle for consistency.
Toronto – Montreal (5-4 OT) By far the craziest game of the night. Reimer was injured early in the game with “whiplash” and the Monster was brought in and played awful in net for Toronto. Thankfully for the Leafs, Price was even worse. Kessel scored again in this one while Grabovski scored the tying goal late and OT winner on a beautiful spin move. A changing of the guard in Canada with Toronto looking entertaining and gaining points while the Habs are off to one of the worst starts in their great franchise’s history.
Columbus – Ottawa (3-4) If the Blue Jackets had any fans they would be jumping off of buildings for this loss. Up a goal with a minute left and in search of their first win, Spezza tied the game for the Senators and with 5 ticks on the clock Michalek tip in the winner of a Gonchar shot. At least they have Ohio St., oh wait….
St. Louis – Philadelphia (4-2) The Blues got back to .500 with this much needed road win. More importantly, the Flyers and their goaltending showed their first cracks of the season. Bryzy allowed a softie early in the game to Huskins and then a terrible miscommunication with the score 3-2 put the game away as D’Agostini scored in a empty net while Illya was trying to play the puck behind the net.
NJ Devils – Pittsburgh (1-4) I don’t know how they do it but the Penguin march just keeps on coming. Tonight, it was Jordan Staal’s turn to steal the show with 2 goals while Neal added another goal. Just wait till they are whole. As for the Devils, the injuries are starting to mount with Zajac out already and now Josefson out long term. Marty still isn’t between the pipes, and Parise gets hammered Friday by Thornton to no response. Becareful here!
Detroit – Washington (1-7) – I know the Caps didn’t face Jimmy Howard and it was a back to back situation for the Wings, but the Caps still made a strong statement staying unbeaten. 7-0 record and getting very little from Semin and Backstrom. Mike Green, however, is off to a great start and Johansen in contributing after his opening day benching. Vokoun with a real team, look out! As for the Wings, not exactly the way to handle game no. 1500 for Nik Norris Trophy Lidstrom.
Carolina – Winnipeg (3-5) Brian Boucher, all of Winnipeg thanks you! An awful display of goaltending in this one. Long shots by Slater and Ladd find the net. Carolina fought back but it’s hard to win when the goalie does little to stop the puck. The much maligned Jet offense (which sport are we talking about?) finally has something to write home about anyway.
Buffalo – Tampa Bay (0-3) The one ho-hum game of the night. Tampa Bay, since going to Garon, has been much better. Buffalo must have been enjoying the Florida sun too much on Friday because they slept through this one.
Islanders – Florida (2-4) I think I jinxed my old employers. I opened the What’s Brewin in Hockey Show last week raving about their offense and how they would surprise teams and make the playoffs and have laid two eggs since. Much like most New Yorkers, they went to Florida to die. For the Panthers, they are off to a positive start. Heck they even have fans coming to the games. Dale Tallon was at it again before the game trading David Booth, Steve Reinprecht and a pick to the Canucks for Michael Samuellson and Marco Strum. Love the move for the Panthers, new scenery for Booth and Samuellson can fire that puck. Stephen Weiss, your up next on the “Let’s clear the locker room of all the losers of the past” game show.
Colorado – Chicago (5-4 SO) I have to admit this game got hidden amongst all of the 7:00 games endings, but it was one of the better tilts of the evening. Holy Young Stars, Batman in this one! The Avs are young, exciting and getting ready to be really important again. Landeskog is the real deal and the goalie was worth the pick. As for the Blackhawks, 4-1-2 start, they will take it.
Dallas – LA Kings (0-1) Jack Johnson is the most productive player in the NHL. 3 goals this season = 3 Game Winners. Quick now has 3 shutouts and the Kings are playing the kind of defense needed for a playoff run. Look out for this team! The Stars are about to get new ownership and that’s good cause they’ll want to build off of this 6-2 start. It’s reminds me of the Orioles usually start ok, are awaful for the majority of the year, and then get good again at the end of the year.
Last and Purposely Least New York Rangers – Edmonton (0-2) Are they kidding? Well, yes they are! The New York Rangers refuse to admit their addiction to not having a real number 1 defensemen. The PP is at 5%. I’m pretty sure me, Brew, Wassel and even Scotty could score one before they do. The coach was livid after this one, so of course that was the media’s fault as he blew them off (Does he intend on repaying the Newspapers that spent good money for their people to cover you). The Rangers core of Anisimov, Callahan and Dubinsky all got raises and are now playing like Rangers free agent signings counting their money and not earning it. Not to beat a dead horse here, because there will be more posts about this, but GET A LEGIT BLUELINER!! As for the Oilers, how could you not root for this team? It’s like watching your elementary school child perform at the High School Talent Show. Love everything about what they are doing there. Renney will have them ready for the next coach that is brought in to advance in the playoffs.
So that’s it. I’m pretty sure I burnt a few calories typing this. Enjoy your Sunday. One game on the docket and it’s Phoenix – Anaheim late, meaning it’s a football Sunday. The one day this hockey fan cares about that League.
